The first cohort, which graduated in January 2025, represents a diverse group of scholars from over 15 countries, each with a unique journey and a shared determination to build a future in technology. Over 1,700 students took part in the program, their stories are about breaking barriers, redefining career possibilities, and shaping Africa’s digital future. Following their graduation, the graduates were inducted into an alumni community to further guide them on their tech journey. Also, outstanding students from the cohort were rewarded with cash prizes and other mouth watering opportunities, as announced during their graduation event which was held virtually.

Bridging the Tech Skills Gap in Africa

Despite Africa’s growing digital economy, a significant skills gap remains a major challenge. Stats show that 90% of children in Africa complete school without learning a digital skill. This is why many businesses and startups struggle to find local talent with the right technical expertise, while millions of young Africans face unemployment or underemployment due to a lack of relevant skills. The demand for software developers, data analysts, cybersecurity experts, and digital marketers is increasing, yet access to quality training remains limited for many.

The Tech4Africans Scholarship Program is an initiative by TechCrush, an internationally accredited edutech institution, by the American Council of Training and Development, ACTD.  The program offers courses in high-demand fields such as software engineering, data science, UI/UX design, and digital marketing, ensuring that participants acquire the knowledge needed to compete in the global job market. Beyond technical training, the scholarship emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking, and real-world application, skills essential for thriving in the tech industry.

By democratizing access to tech education, the scholarship is helping to create a more inclusive digital economy. Participants who may not have had the financial means to enroll in expensive coding bootcamps or university programs now have the chance to learn, grow, and contribute to Africa’s booming tech ecosystem.

The Journey Through the Tech4Africans Bootcamp

Many Tech4Africans scholars have taken to social media to describe their rewarding experience. It was three months of intensive and experiential learning.

The journey started with onboarding sessions designed to build the right mindset—confidence, discipline, and adaptability. Scholars didn’t just jump into coding or analytics; they first learned how to approach problems, think critically, and stay resilient in a fast-paced industry.

Once onboarded, they joined their respective tracks: Front-End Development, Back-End Development, UI/UX Design, Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, and Digital Marketing. Experienced and approachable tutors guided them through the learning process, breaking down complex concepts and ensuring every scholar stayed on track.

SowAmadu from Sierra Leonne noted,

“Walahi TechCrush is doing something wonderful I’m overwhelmed with the excitement from my track #Cybersecurity Feels like taking someone from Sierra Leone to the USA”.

This is from Chinonso, “You really need to sit under these tutors. They’re d best!💯, They made learning tech so much easier”. A quick look at this will give you a perfect picture of what he meant.

The program featured multiple live webinars with industry experts, where scholars gained insider knowledge on career growth, industry trends, and the skills that top companies seek. These sessions also gave them access to professionals working at the forefront of tech, making the learning experience even more impactful.

Collaboration was a major highlight. Scholars from different tracks teamed up to brainstorm and build capstone projects that solved real-world problems. Working together pushed them beyond their comfort zones, strengthened their teamwork skills, and gave them a taste of the fast-moving tech industry.

As the program wrapped up, scholars reflected on how much they had grown. The long hours, the challenges, the breakthroughs, it all led to this moment. They didn’t just complete a bootcamp; they walked away with in-demand skills, a powerful network, and the confidence to take on new opportunities.

More Opportunities to Learn and Grow

With each cohort, the Tech4Africans Scholarship Program continues to evolve, opening doors for more aspiring tech professionals across Africa. The next edition promises an even richer learning experience, with the introduction of Technical Writing, Virtual Assistance, alongside existing tracks like software engineering, data science, UI/UX design, and cybersecurity.
