Job Overview
- We seek a Project Director to provide vision, leadership and direction to ensure the strategic, programmatic, technical, and financial integrity for an innovative Unitaid regional project titled Post-Discharge Malaria Chemoprevention.
- The four-year, multi-country project will aim to accelerate implementation and generate evidence to catalyze the adoption and scale-up of PDMC to address the burden of childhood anemia and malaria.
- The Project Director will lead a dynamic team providing quality technical, operational, and financial oversight for core activities and direct technical assistance and capacity strengthening support to country-led programs.
- S/he will provide overall strategic leadership and vision for the Jhpiego-led team and will manage long- and short-term technical support across all result areas, and ensure the project meets the stated goals and reporting requirements.
- S/he will be responsible for making key decisions and solving problems in short timeframes while ensuring operations and project quality and integrity.
- S/he will ensure effective organizational management and communication with Unitaid, the host country government at all levels, international partners and agencies, local research organizations, civil society and community-based organizations.
- The Project Director will be based in the United States or in Sub-Saharan Africa and travel will be required.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic direction, leadership and management oversight for large, complex, multi-country activities
- Ensure project is technically sound, evidence-based and responsive to the needs of host countries and Unitaid requirements
- Oversee project work planning, performance management, and strategic communications
- Manage a diverse team of technical, financial, operational and management staff, maintaining a high level of staff morale
- Ensure project activities are meeting expectations (on time, on scope, on budget), with the highest technical quality and are compliant with the terms of the award
- Draft formal and ad hoc reports requested by the donor and Jhpiego
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with Unitaid, WHO, host country governments, their ministries, as well as other implementing partners, private sector partners and other key stakeholders to maximize resources and ensure the smooth implementation of activities
- Represent Jhpiego and the project’s progress, achievements and lessons learned to donors, other key stakeholders, and through meetings, conferences, and presentations
- Contribute to the mentoring, and managing a team of highly qualified staff and aligns their efforts to ensure rapid and sustainable results
- Oversee technical and programmatic capacity strengthening for subcontractors and subgrantees
- Write and/or review project materials and publications
- Work with finance and project staff to develop and track project budgets
- Work with MERL team to develop and track indicators and results
- Document successes, lessons learned and challenges in implementation as well as reports of project activities and results to the project and donor, including routine quarterly and annual reports and other reporting requirements as requested
- Contribute to the provision of technical leadership and to ensuring technical excellence and exchange across Jhpiego’s portfolio of malaria projects
Required Qualifications
- Advanced Degree in public health, pharmacy, health administration, international health, public administration or a related field
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience implementing and/or managing large, complex donor-funded health programs across multiple countries in Africa
- Demonstrated outstanding leadership, strategic thinking, organizational, team-building, and representational skills
- Strong understanding of and experience with malaria programming and technical expertise in severe malaria case management, post-distribution malaria chemoprevention, policy and strategy development, health systems strengthening including supply chain management
- Knowledge of and/or experience with product introduction, demonstration projects and building evidence across multiple countries
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge in establishing systems, implementing project start-up and using project management tools
- Understanding of the social and political context, and developments in the health sector of project countries
- Excellent diplomacy skills and a proven ability to establish and sustain interpersonal and professional relationships with host-country counterparts, project partners and representatives from other key stakeholders such as NGOs, CSOs, the private sector and international donors
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in financial planning and management, human resources, and procurement, among other management support areas/functions
- Previous direct supervisory experience of project technical and operational staff
- Expertise in research to practice—identifying best practices and adapting them to project realities
- Experience developing strategic plans in cooperation with others who represent a wide range of interests and needs
- Ability to coach, mentor and develop technical and operational capacity of staff in regional and national projects
- Ability to interact with established networks of senior level international health professionals, donors, universities and other partners

Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to read, speak and write in French
