Job Description
- Participates in project planning. Guides and encourages the translation team.
- Provides technical help on translation-related issues.
- Trains on translation principles.
- Mentors mother tongue translation workers. Authors, co-authors, or facilitates the writing of technical papers.
Job Responsibilities
- Review and utilize any relevant previous studies or research.
- Work with the team to gather and analyze language data.
- Assist with the development of a written form for the language.
- Assist with the discovery and documentation of discourse features of the language.
- Assist with documentation of relational terms and habits of the people.
- Assist with documentation of beliefs underlying the habits of the people.
- Write or facilitate the writing of technical papers.
- Assist Facilitator in translation program planning and monitoring.
- Train workers in exegetical and translation principles.
- Guide the team in exegetical preparation.
- Assist with the translation process.
- Guide the team in testing the translation with speakers of the language.
- Participate in the review of translations.
Education & Experience
- B.A. in Linguistics, Biblical Languages, or related field. M.A. or Ph.D. preferred.
- Satisfactory performance in courses substantially similar to these SIL standard courses:
- Articulatory Phonetics,
- Cultural Anthropology,
- Language and Culture Learning,
- Language and Society,
- Morphology and Syntax,
- Phonology,
- Linguistic Field Methods,
- Computer Data Management,
- Semantics and Pragmatics,
- Translation Principles, Theory and Practice.
- Two years of experience in the job responsibilities listed above preferred
